How do I get a real job with a four year gap with no professional experience?

I graduated from college four years ago, and have been unable to get a real job since then. I've been working unskilled jobs to get by, via a temp agency. Now, I'm at the point where I'm broke, and have to get a permenant job NOW. Most likely, it'll be an unskilled job in a supermarket or something.

I graduated in the top ten percent of my class, and have outstanding skills; however, I have Ausberger's Syndrome, and the "social" aspect of the job search has killed me. Four years have now gone by, and I have no professional experience.

Do I still have a chance with employers?

Start by applying for government jobs, city, county, state, community colleges and school districts. This would be a good start.

sorry to hear that you are having problems finding work, college degrees anymore aren't worth the paper they're printed on unless you have a specialized degree and unique skills that fit a certain career choice.refresher courses,to hone your skills, with resume and interview skills, what you have is a form of autisum, and can be medicated to be able to fuction,w/interview and even work.but i think you knew this already, anyhow, try a head hunter, executive placement service, to help you get your foot in the door

I have a daughter with Asperger's Syndrome who is 23 years old so I totally understand your dilemma with the social end of things. Don't be afraid to take a job that is unskilled until you are able to find the one that is right for you. Your main focus right now is to keep ahead of the bills and you may have to take whatever is available to do that. In the meantime, you might want to consider a home business. My daughter is working full time at a soap store and building a business with my help...I offer this training and assistance to everyone in my organization. While doing this, she is sharpening her social skills as well, win win situation.

In answer to your question, yes you definately have a chance with employers. Asperger's is becoming more familiar to people and they are realizing that these students are brilliant! Asperger's is not an affliction, it is just a different way of perceiving things. You should be proud of your accomplishments and take them with your head held high to all potential employers!

I wish you the best of luck in your endeavours and would love to hear from you on how it is going.

All the very best to you

Hi,

The most important thing to remember about job searches is that you should use a combination of methods regardless of your location.

Networking - Register at your local Unemployment Office (you don't need to be on unemployment to register for their assistance). They often will have networking groups on a regular basis. They also are a good source for the jobs that never show up in the paper or online.

Check your local paper -- In many cases the paper's classified are now online.

Search Smart Online -- If you don't have a lot of time, spend most of your time at sites that aggregate the job feeds from several job search engines. Prominently these include indeed.com and thingamajob.com.

Organization -- I use a free online application that allows you to track your ads, jobs you apply for, send or print mail merged correspondence, and track your job search history. This site is jobsearchlog.com

Good Luck,

Karen
