What kind of job does our public school system do in teaching history?

I am 60 years old and I have always enjoyed history. From time to time I put questions of history on here and from the answers I get I realize that a lot of people on here have very little knowledge of history. So does our public high schools do a lousy job of teaching history?

Considering the fact that I know a 16 year old girl who didn't know what a Nazi was, I'll have to say yes.

I would say yes. I have been out of school for about 10 years and nothing has stuck in my head about history. Everything that I do know about history I learned in tech school or I researched myself.
